The roots of CRM are in a digital evolution of a Rolodex type system of storing business cards. When once you could flip through a rotating stack of contact details, by the 1980s you could use first generation contact management software to search a database by name, category or other attributes.
The term CRM wasn’t coined until 1995, by which time the notion of contact details, history and automatically triggered actions (e.g. sales calls, emails, promotions) was bedded into mainstream business thinking.
