On 2nd May, MAST exhibited at Membership Excellence – the UK’s largest membership focused national conference, held this year at Novotel London West Hotel. Over 700 delegates attended, the majority from London-based professional membership organisations.

The event provided a perfect forum for airing the key challenges facing membership organisations including:

  • Recruiting new members, especially the younger generation, with the aim of increasing new members by 12%-17% annually.
  • Retaining existing members – it costs 8x less to retain a member than recruit a new one
  • Improving member engagement through engagement plans and better value for money
  • Digital opportunities includng social media, apps and electronic magazines

Throughout the day, our team met face-to-face and talked in depth with a range of different membership organisations. Many of our discussions were about the challenges faced by organisations with their current membership system.

Hot topics included cutting down manual processes, access to management information and the debate between system replacement and system improvement – all areas where MAST has many years’ experience.

Membership Excellence 2019 marked the 14th year of the national conference. The event  is now a key event in the calendar for membership organisations. It’s renowned for sharing knowledge, highlighting best practice and networking for industry professionals.

This years’s seminar programme gave delegates insights into the latest in membership focused solutions. In addition, delegates and exhibitors were invited to talks led by several industry leaders including The National Trust’s Ian Oxley and British Rowing’s Emily Charlotte who shared insights into membership acquisition and making meaningful connections respectively.
